Adelonema peltatum
Adelonema peltatum is a wet-tropical aroid with shield-like leaves and a grounded, terrestrial growth habit. The petiole attaches away from the leaf edge, giving the foliage the peltate shape reflected in the species name.
Stable warmth, filtered light and an airy substrate keep the plant growing steadily. The roots need even moisture, oxygen and quick drainage after watering.
Shield-leaf features of Adelonema peltatum
- Plant type: Terrestrial tropical aroid with a compact, rhizomatous base.
- Leaf shape: Shield-like peltate leaves with the stalk attached underneath the blade.
- Foliage: Broad green blades held on upright petioles.
- Native range: Native to wet tropical Colombia and Ecuador.
- Light: Best in bright filtered light, protected from harsh direct sun.
- Moisture: Likes even moisture with oxygen around the roots.
- Humidity: Higher humidity helps new leaves expand cleanly.
Peltate foliage of Adelonema peltatum
Adelonema peltatum grows as a tropical aroid from wet forest regions of Colombia to Ecuador. In a pot, it grows best with warm temperatures, steady moisture and an airy root zone.
Its peltate leaves attach underneath the blade rather than at the edge. This gives each leaf a shield-like outline on an upright stalk.
Care for Adelonema peltatum
- Light: Give bright filtered light; direct midday sun can mark the broad leaves.
- Water: Water when the upper part of the mix has started to dry, then let excess water drain fully.
- Humidity: Aim for moderate to high humidity, especially while new leaves are unfurling.
- Temperature: Keep warm and stable; cold roots can quickly lead to yellowing or collapse.
- Soil: Use an airy aroid mix with bark, fibre and mineral drainage so the rhizome base stays oxygenated.
- Repotting: Move up only when the root system fills the pot; keep the stem base at the same depth.
- Fertilising: Feed lightly during active growth with a diluted balanced fertiliser.
- Pruning: Remove tired leaves at the base with clean scissors.
- Propagation: Division is the most realistic method when the plant has produced separate growth points.
- Semi-hydroponics: Possible with warm roots, clean oxygenated mineral substrate and careful transition.
Leaf and root issues in Adelonema peltatum
- Brown leaf edges: Usually linked to dry air, irregular watering or salts in the substrate.
- Yellow soft growth: Check for cold, saturated roots or a buried stem base.
- Stuck new leaves: Often caused by low humidity or moisture swings during unfurling.
- Pests: Inspect the undersides of leaves and petiole bases for thrips, mites, mealybugs and scale.
- Slow recovery: Warmth and root stability matter more than extra fertiliser after stress.
Safety for Adelonema peltatum
As an aroid, Adelonema peltatum should be kept away from pets and children that chew plants. Plant tissue may irritate the mouth, throat and stomach if eaten.
Botanical background of Adelonema peltatum
The species epithet peltatum refers to the peltate, shield-like leaf attachment. In 2016, Sin Yeng Wong, Alan W. Meerow and Thomas B. Croat published “Resurrection and new species of the Neotropical genus Adelonema (Araceae: Philodendron Clade)” in Systematic Botany 41(1): 32–48.
The paper transferred Neotropical species formerly placed in Homalomena into Adelonema, because molecular and morphological evidence separated them from Asian Homalomena. Adelonema peltatum was published there as Adelonema peltatum (Mast.) S.Y.Wong & Croat.
Adelonema peltatum grows as a compact shield-leaved aroid for warm, humid indoor setups.
